Levey Middle School 8th Grade Mental Health Experience Assembly
Rooted Reminder Foundation recently had the opportunity to speak with the 8th grade students at Levey Middle School about the important transition from middle school to high school and the challenges that often come with it. Together, we explored topics such as self-worth, confidence, peer pressure, mental health, and the desire to fit in. Students were encouraged to stay true to themselves, make choices that align with their values, and understand that they do not have to change who they are to be accepted by others. Through personal stories, reflection, and open conversation, we reminded students that their uniqueness is their strength and that true confidence comes from embracing who they are rather than trying to fit into someone else's expectations. It was an honor to connect with these students and empower them as they prepare for the next chapter of their journey.
A reminder that who you are is enough and who you become starts with the choices you make today.
Before Rooted Reminder Foundation was formally established in 2026, the work had already begun in 2021.
🌳 Caleb’s Kids 🌳
Songwriting & Empowerment Experience
In 2021 At just 19 years old, I had the opportunity to lead my very first Rooted initiative in partnership with Caleb’s Kids.
During this experience, I shared my personal story, introduced my music and creative journey, and created a space where young individuals could feel safe expressing themselves.
Together, we watched music videos, had open conversations, and collaborated on writing an original song centered around identity, resilience, and growth.
🌳 Caleb’s Kids Songwriting & Empowerment 🌳
Experience Continued Partnership
Returning to Caleb’s Kids for a second session was a powerful reminder of the importance of consistency and safe spaces.
With a new group of students, ranging from ages 9–13, we created an environment centered on openness, creativity, and emotional expression.
Through conversation and collaborative songwriting, students were encouraged to share their thoughts, experiences, and feelings without judgment.
This experience highlighted how impactful it can be when young individuals are given the opportunity to express themselves freely and feel genuinely supported.
🌳 Boys & Girls Club of Southeast Michigan🌳
Creative Expression & Emotional Development Partnership
In 2024, I began leading a year-long creative and emotional development program in partnership with the Boys & Girls Club of Southeast Michigan, alongside Detroit’s own Big Sean and the Sean Anderson Foundation.
Over the course of a year and a half, this initiative provided youth with a space to explore both their creativity and emotional well-being through music, storytelling, and connection.
✨ Program Experience✨
Students were guided through a full creative journey that included:
• songwriting and storytelling
• journaling and emotional reflection
• building emotional vocabulary
• professionally recording a song in a studio
• creating a professional music videoThis experience gave them the opportunity to step into the role of an artist while also learning how to understand and express their emotions in a healthy way.
✨ Impact & Transformation✨
At the beginning of the program, many of the students struggled with communication, connection, and sometimes showing kindness toward one another.
As the experience continued, something powerful began to shift.
Through consistent safe spaces, creative expression, and open conversations, students slowly began to:
• open up to one another
• relate to each other’s experiences
• build trust and connection
• develop empathy and understanding
By the end of the program, the transformation was visible.
There was more unity, more compassion, and a noticeable shift in how they treated one another, more smiles, more support, and more care.
What began as a group of individuals became a connected community.
Let this be a reminder…
If you can save a mind, you can save a life.
Rooted Reminder Foundation was established with a mission,
but the work began long before it had a name.
For years, spaces like these were being created …
spaces where youth could feel seen, heard, understood, and safe.
Through storytelling, creativity, and connection,
these experiences helped plant the seeds of what Rooted Reminder Foundation is today.
The goal has always been the same: to remind individuals that healing IS possible, you are NOT alone and most importantly there IS a future worth moving toward and you are capable of getting there.
This is why we do what we do.
And why we will continue to expand this work into schools, communities, and beyond.
If you resonated with any of the initiatives shared, we invite you to support the mission and help us continue creating spaces like these.
